This is the gear list for the 5 day backpacking trip in Hoover Wilderness (Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest) in July 2019. I normally over-pack, so I have made notes (in bold parentheses). I could have easily cut out 7 pounds by eliminating the “unnecessary” items. Often when backpacking, less is more.

Clothes
- 3 short sleeve shirt (only needed 1 or 2)
- 2 pairs of shorts – one hiking, 1 “basketball” shorts (only needed 1 pair)
- Long hiking pants
- Smart wool medium base layer (for sleeping)
- Socks: 4 pairs (probably could have carried one less)
- Underwear: 3 pairs (probably could have carried one less)
- Sun hat
- Handkerchief
- Polyester puffy jacket
- Hiking boots
Cooking and water
- MSR pocket rocket
- 8 ounce isobutane canister
- Plastic forks/spoon
- MSR foldable spatula (for pancakes)

- Platypus 1L collapsible water bottle (2) (only needed 1 water bottle as there is plenty of water, but the collapsible bottles weigh almost nothing and don’t take up much space)
- Platypus 2L collapsible water bottle (see comments above)
- Sawyer squeeze water filter system

- Pancake mix (just add water type)

- Ramen
- Bear Creek Darn good chili mix
