The second brood developed faster than the first. One fledgling remained after 16 days in the nestbox as the adults tried to make him fledge.
The second brood of the season hatched and we have 4 babies accounted for. They are about 3 days old. We took a quick peek inside the nestbox while the mother was out.
The Roller Coaster is one of the most challenging sections of the AT. The terrain is as follows: climb, descend, repeat. You gain nearly a mile in elevation over the course of 12 miles on the roller coaster and finishing the section is a fulfilling accomplishment.
The "new" Blues looks like they have made a permanent residence in the nestbox. Could a new brood be in the works?
Day hike of the Southernmost section of PA on the AT. 7.6 miles from Old Forge to Pen Mar Park. Elevation gain of 1,900 feet.
The Blues are back in town! Maybe it's not the same family, but there are potential buyers on the market for the Blue's old house.
Section hike from Keys Gap at the VA/WV border to Snickers Gap, VA. One AT shelter, three overlooks, and 13 miles of what you would expect on the AT.
Early yesterday morning we checked out the window to see the activity around the nestbox. The fledglings were about 18 days old and it was time for them to fly.
The fledglings are not so little anymore. At approximately 2 1/2 weeks old, the babies will most likely depart the nest in the next few days. They are very loud whenever the parents are nearby. Now several of the fledglings will stick their head out of the nestbox entrance in an attempt to be the first to reach the food.
The fledglings should be about two weeks old now and they are audibly louder whenever the adults bring food to the nestbox. I haven’t seen Mama around the nextbox for a few days, only Papa to provide food. More on that after the video…
After a change to a new camera location closer to the nestbox, we can now hear some of the activities going on around the Blue's residence. No surprise most of the noise is coming from the baby birds chirping for food each time one of the adults returns.
